Higotai Park: A Grand Panorama Beyond the Mist—A Quiet Meadow Stroll with My Dog

It was drizzling that day, and for a moment, I hesitated. “Should we really go…?” I wondered. But since we had come all the way to Ubuyama Village and Elmo seemed eager for some fresh air, I decided to take the plunge and stop by Higotai Park.

When we arrived, our car was the only one in the parking lot—it was as if we had the entire place to ourselves. Stepping out, I was greeted by the heavy, moisture-laden air and a landscape softly shrouded in mist.

Normally, rain during a trip is a bit of a letdown, but Higotai Park had a unique, indescribable atmosphere that day. Elmo seemed equally intrigued, busily sniffing the damp grass—a scent different from his usual walks—as we began our exploration.

A Landscape Whose Greatness Shines Through the Haze

As we followed the walking path, the view ahead was blurred by the mist. Yet, seeing such a breathtaking sight even under these conditions made me realize how stunning it must be on a clear day.

Every time the mountain ridgelines peeked through gaps in the fog, I was struck by the sheer scale: “Wow, the meadows go on forever!” On a clear day, this spot offers a 360-degree panorama of the Aso Five Peaks and the Kuju Mountain Range. Even through the haze, I could feel the immense presence of the landscape stretching out beyond my vision.

In the absolute silence, the only sounds were the gentle patter of rain and Elmo’s rhythmic footsteps. There was a certain luxury in having this vast space all to ourselves, undisturbed by anyone. While the views weren’t crystal clear, I left with a firm resolve: “I absolutely have to come back when the sun is out.”

When the Higotai Flowers Bloom

True to its name, from August to September, the park becomes a haven for its namesake: the “Higotai” (Globe Thistle). This rare flower, designated as an endangered species, is known for its distinct, spherical blue shape. I’m already curious to see how the scenery transforms during that season.

Based on our walk, here are a few points to keep in mind when visiting with a dog:

  • Well-Maintained Paths: There are clear trails through the meadows, making it easy to walk. However, there are some inclines and descents, so be careful not to slip on rainy days.
  • Restrooms and Facilities: There are facilities near the entrance, providing peace of mind before and after your walk.

A Special Memory in Ubuyama: “I’ll Definitely Be Back”

To be honest, this walk wasn’t so much about “seeing a great view” as it was about “imagining how incredible the view must be on a sunny day.” If it can be this overwhelming even when shrouded in mist, I can only imagine how beautiful it is when the sky opens up. My expectations for this place have only grown.

If you happen to visit Aso and the weather isn’t ideal, I still think Higotai Park is well worth the visit. A rainy day has its own quiet beauty, and it only makes you look forward to your next visit even more.
