Dog-Friendly Dolphin Watching on the Shimanami Kaido: A Day Trip to Dolphin Farm Shimanami
We’d been meaning to check out Dolphin Farm Shimanami for ages, and when we caught a break in the rainy season in early June, my wife and I finally made the drive with our French Bulldog, Elmo!
This spot on Hakata Island along the Shimanami Kaido is famous for its dolphin encounters, but here’s what most people don’t know — it’s actually a hidden gem for dog walking too. Since we went on a weekday, we basically had the whole place to ourselves.
What’s Dolphin Farm Shimanami All About?
Dolphin Farm Shimanami is a marine facility in Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture, where you can get up close with dolphins. It’s pretty easy to reach along the Shimanami Kaido (the famous cycling route connecting Honshu and Shikoku), and with a solid 4.1 Google rating, it’s clearly doing something right.
The facility offers everything from simple dolphin watching to hands-on experiences where you can touch them or even swim alongside them. But even if you just want to watch, visitors say it’s totally worth the trip — especially popular with families and couples.

Elmo’s First Dolphin Farm Adventure!
The first thing that hit me was how spacious this place is! Way bigger than I expected, with this amazing open feel and sea breeze blowing through.

Elmo was wagging his tail like crazy at first, excited about the new place. But when it came to the actual dolphins… not so interested (laughs). He was way more fascinated by the little crabs and sea bugs scurrying around the dolphin pens.

When we walked up to the dolphin enclosure, they immediately glided over to greet us! They’re incredibly friendly — kept popping their heads up to say hello. This was my first time seeing dolphins this close, and man, they really are adorable.

The dolphins seemed super curious about us, especially my wife — they kept staring at her intently. Meanwhile, Elmo was… completely ignoring them (laughs). He was busy scratching his face with his back leg and cleaning his ears, looking totally bored.

Still, watching the dolphins splash and swim was genuinely beautiful and calming. The weekday timing worked out perfectly — hardly anyone else around, so we could take our time watching them.

Walking around the facility, we found this area with three connected bridges that form a little hill. The bridges have this slight swaying motion, and Elmo had a blast running up and down them. I think he enjoyed this more than the dolphins (laughs).

A Little Side Story
Actually, something nice happened during our visit. Near the entrance, my wife spotted something on the ground. Turns out it was a wallet that some high school kids we’d passed on the way in had dropped.
We immediately handed it in at reception. You know how these little good deeds just make your whole day feel brighter?
The Good and Not-So-Good
What We Loved
Having the place almost to ourselves on a weekday was amazing! We could spend quality time with the dolphins without any rush, which was super relaxing.
The facility is surprisingly spacious — perfect for walking your dog. With that refreshing sea breeze, even just strolling around feels rejuvenating.
And those dolphins! Their friendliness really caught me off guard. The way they’d swim right over and keep popping up to greet us was ridiculously cute.
Final Thoughts
Dolphin Farm Shimanami turned out to be perfect not just for dolphin watching, but for a nice dog walk too. Especially on weekdays when it’s quiet — you can really take your time and relax.
Sure, Elmo was more interested in the sea bugs, crabs, and wobbly bridges than the actual dolphins (laughs), but he still loved exploring the spacious grounds.
If you’re driving the Shimanami Kaido, definitely stop by. Those adorable dolphins will melt your heart!
