A Scenic Drive and Stroll: Cruising the Yamanami Highway with My Dog

If you’re looking to enjoy a drive in Kyushu, this is the one place you absolutely cannot miss. Today, I’m sharing a “drive-and-stroll” report from the Yamanami Highway—one of Japan’s premier scenic routes—where Elmo and I go time and time again.

The Mecca of Kyushu Driving! Heading to the Yamanami Highway, an Elmo Favorite

On those days when the weather is perfect and I think, “Let’s go somewhere!” the first place that pops into my mind is the “Yamanami Highway.” This famous route stretches from Beppu City in Oita Prefecture all the way to Aso City in Kumamoto Prefecture.

For drivers in Kyushu, this spot is a “classic among classics.” Yet, no matter how many times I visit, I’m always moved by its beauty. Elmo seems to love this road just as much as I do; he’s constantly signaling for me to open the window so he can stick his head out and take in the view.

The real charm of this road is the overwhelming sense of freedom. Every single turn offers a picture-perfect view, and just gripping the steering wheel makes all my stress vanish. It’s a truly special place.

Vibrant Greenery and Stunning Views! Enjoying a “Freestyle Drive and Stroll” with Elmo

As soon as you enter the Yamanami Highway, you’re greeted by endless greenery as far as the eye can see. The road stretches out straight against the majestic silhouette of the Kuju Mountains. When you roll the windows all the way down, you’re hit with that cool yet soft breeze unique to the highlands. Watching Elmo twitch his nose, doing his best to catch the scents of the new season, is honestly the cutest thing ever.

What makes this course so dog-friendly is the abundance of spots where you can stop for a quick walk. Whenever you think, “Oh, this spot is gorgeous!” there’s usually a place nearby to pull over. For dog owners, that’s a huge plus.

Beyond the parking lots with large observatories, even the small roadside spaces offer incredible vistas. I can let Elmo out, extend his leash, and enjoy a “mini-stroll” right then and there.

There are also souvenir shops and eateries dotted along the way. Our routine is to grab some local delicacies or a regional soft-serve ice cream whenever we get a bit peckish. Many places offer terrace seating, so we can take a break with Elmo without any hesitation.

It seems Elmo really appreciates the balance, too—not just staying in the car, but getting out frequently to do some “sniff-work” and feel the grass under his paws.

You don’t even need a specific destination. Just driving this road, stopping whenever something catches your eye, and soaking in the scenery with your dog—that is the kind of luxurious time you find on the Yamanami Highway.

A Perfect Drive with Your Dog: New Discoveries Every Time

Spanning Oita and Kumamoto prefectures, this road is truly a sanctuary for driving with pets. Everywhere you look is beautiful, and every mile feels incredible. The mountains and greenery change their expression with every season, so I never get tired of it.

If you’re looking to hit the “refresh” button, I highly recommend heading out for a drive and stroll with your dog! The area is packed with spots where you can play from morning until well into the evening.

I’m already planning our next trip to cruise through that green panorama with Elmo again very soon!
